Drawing Project

The aim of this project was to create a series of 100 drawings in various way which would eventually lead to me improving my technique as well as expanding my knowledge of different materials. During the first week of the project the aim was to create 50 drawing of something you found in your pocket, or what can fit in your pocket. So for inspiration, the group visited Berwick-Upon-Tweed. However, as I found nothing small of interest I decided to use my necklace. I chose this due to fact that it was small as well and having tiny details that you can only see when looking very closely at the necklace; specifically the chain and the clasp.

When beginning the first 50 drawings I found that I was struggling to find new and unique techniques by around the 10th drawing. As well as this, instead of doing quick sketches i was doing extremely small and detailed drawing which were starting to become very time consuming. When stuck for new and creative ideas i asked those in my studio for inspiration on what i could do.

By the second week I had to chose another object to do a further 50 drawings off. For the second half of my project I chose my favourite lipstick purely due to its vibrant colour of which contrasted the silver of my necklace. New techniques I used included using my left hand to draw, drawing blind-folded, using mixed media as well as ripping up paper and collaging to for an overall image. Whilst the images produced from techniques such as using my left hand or drawing blind-folded produced a very interesting finish. Although, they were not very detailed or 'perfect' drawings, they were one of my favourite drawing out of the full 100. This 100 drawing project taught me not to be so detailed, precise or overly critical on my work. This is because some of the quicker and messier drawings (those that were more free hand) were more interesting and made you think about what you were looking at compared to an exact copy of what was in front of me.

To conclude to this project, we had to create a final piece creating a hybrid of the two objects that we had chosen. If I was to do this project again I would chose two objects that were less similar to each other. For example, one man-made object and one natural object. This is because when merging the two pieces together the outcome was nothing exiting and very one dimensional. Overall, the outcome to this project was fairly successful. Although the end product wasn't as good as I expected, the thought of drawing 100 different drawings using as many different techniques as possible really helped the way I think and analyse my artwork.

How has your use of and ideas about drawing supported your Fine Art practice during this module?
What is your definition of drawing?

The use of ideas when drawing within this module has allowed me to expand on my knowledge about what drawing really is. The ideas behind using many different methods of drawing as well as producing the actual drawings have supported my Fine Art practice by improving on my methods and techniques as well as increasing the thought and creativity behind each drawing.

Throughout this module my definition of drawing has changed. In the beginning I thought drawing was simply a dry media onto a material such as paper or wood. However, as this module continued I learned that this is not true. Drawing can be classed through numerous forms of art, including when using paint. Although I struggled to then see a difference between a painting and a drawing I soon came to realise that these two techniques aren't that different from each other as i first though. This is because they both use various lines and textures in order to create an overall image. Therefore, concluding on my definition of drawing being a collection of lines, using any material, in order to create a visual image.
