Sculpture Project

The basis behind this project was to create a sculpture with the use of sound. When beginning this project we were all introduced to a recording of Alvin Lucier: 'I Am Sitting In A Room', 1981. This recording consisted of Lucier's voice saying "I am sitting in a room". After each time of saying the phrase, Lucier would then re-record the previous recording. Eventually producing a recording where the tone and frequency of Lucier's voice was altered leaving a loud, dull monotone sound.

The next step to this project was to create a series of recording of anything of our choosing. For my project I recorded a series of manufactured inspired sounds. For example, the sound of a car engine and a piece of metal being sandpapered. I decided to go for a manufacturing theme as I had the idea of using chicken wire and a series of various metals in order to create my sculpture. Originally, i was going to make a series of hanging sculpture mimicking the frequencies of my recordings.

However, this was proven to be very difficult, the metal was extremely difficult and cut. As well as this the metal pieces were too heavy to hang up therefore my sculpture were just falling down and breaking. To alter my sculpture, rather than having it hung up, it was going to stand up on the floor. Using the chicken wire, I created a series of cage-like shapes all connected to eachother, each with individual strands of metal hanging inside of them. This was more successful than my original idea as it was able to support itself whilst having a 3 dimensional appearance.

Out of all the projects I found the sculpture project most challenging. This was because through the years when studying art i have been more accustomed to techniques such as drawing and painting whereas  on the other hand, sculpture was a fairly new topic to me.
