Monica Bonvicini

Using a variety of materials, Bonvicini uses sculpture, performance, text and photography within her work. When visiting the BALTIC recently, the work shown from throughout the Bonvcini's career ranged from florescent lights to dark, metal structures; perhaps showing different times within her carer where strengths or struggle presented itself.

Light Me Black, 2009

Light Me Black, consists of 144 fluorescent lights, including steel, metal, chains and electrical cables. When presented in an empty space with plain walls and a wooden floor, the structure dragged all of the attention and purpose of the space towards the centre of the room; ensuring all attention was being paid to itself. The fluorescent lights, traditionally found in in office buildings were recreated in a contemporary form to produce a different aspect on how lighting can be used.
