Artist Theory and Context

Suzanne Saroff,

"Taking shape via shadows or fragmentations, my subjects often become more than the singular and expected versions of themselves."

To me, this quote explains the foundations of my practice throughout this year. I want to add more dimension to the standard oil or acrylic painting. I want to elevate my paintings into something more interesting and play with the boundaries of using water and light within art.

Elusive Signs, Bruce Norman Works with Light

"By layering phrases in complex patterns and employing more advanced switching mechanisms, the artist was able to create dynamic sculptures that invade the surrounding space and demand the viewer's attention."

Although this quote is not directly parallel with my project, on some level it captures what I intend to do with my work when displaying it. Whereas Norman uses neon phrases in a particular pattern, I wish to use a beam of light, perhaps neon, in a directional angle in order to create shadows and reflections. When presenting my work, I want to draw the viewer's attention into the core my work and use the surrounding space as a catalyst to enhance my work rather than a wall of which it is presented.

David Doubilet, National Geographic

"What I like best about photography is giving a visual voice to the invisible."

This explains the true meaning of my project using photography to document my discoveries. When beginning this project I did not expect to discover what I have. Using water and light, I uncovered endless possibilities which I had never imagined. Photography was the reason I was able to document my discoveries and show others the possibilities of using light with water giving my work character.
